Case: Brainport gathers macro-economic information about the development of the Eindhoven region (the Netherlands). High-tech industries in the region require a regular influx of young well-trained engineers. Development of the population is a concern, although visual analysis shows that other countries may be faced with larger problems. 
2 See Patterns • Uncover patterns in the data by sorting data according to occurring patterns. • Use MagnaView Expressions to easily define patterns. Case: PGNPO is responsible for a large-scale administrative operation involving 7700 schools for primary education; a help desk receives and records calls, and needs to find out what patterns occur for incident types. Call patterns are grouped, providing insight in the type of calls that co-occur. 
3 Uncover exceptions • Using suitable color settings and ordering of activities in files allows for immediate spotting of exceptions to regular patterns. • Using icons that are meaningful to users and management helps interpret these exceptions. Case: A municipality using Pallas Athena’s Business Process Management applications requires information about the correct order in which cases should be dealt with. Processes move from one state to the next. Three exceptions are immediately visible, and can easily be studied in detail.
